A few weeks ago, Tubbs and I decided to see if we could maintain a raw diet for a week. At first the hunger was pretty intense, as was the exhaustion, and the hallucinations, but after about three days I began to feel pretty good. Every time I went to Whole Foods to buy more greens, I felt superior to everyone around me. Look at all those silly people who are planning on cooking their food tonight! I would think as I passed the line at the meat counter. Oh, you poor nutrient deprived people! I would muse at the checkout.
Of course, I was still passing out at nine, and dreaming of things like grilled tofu or steamed zucchini, but my nutrient superiority kept me hanging in for five entire days!
All it took was a text message on day 5 from Tubbs that read: Burgers tonight (grass fed of course) – to get me off the wagon, but in a way I miss the austerity of the diet.
Even though we are back to cooking, we have continued to drink our Green Smoothies. Greens are a perfect source of nutrition, the problem is we can’t chew them well enough to get the nutrients. This is where our Blend-Tec blender comes into play. The thing can blend a shoe, and it does wonders on the dandelion roots, kale, chard, and beet greens that we consume on a daily basis. If you look them up here, you can see they have tremendous nutritional value.
Since drinking the green smoothies I wake up alert, and I find that I have a pretty high level of energy throughout the entire day. I don’t even bother with coffee at around 3pm anymore. Just blend up a green smoothie and I’m good to go.
Here’s a simple recipe for the adventurous
2 cups of greens (parsley, beet greens, carrot tops, kale – big fave)
1 inch of ginger
2 cups of water.
